چکیده

We have conducted a survey of 61 southern white dwarfs searching for magnetic fields using Zeeman spectropolarimetry. Our objective is to obtain a magnetic field distribution for these objects and, in particular, to find white dwarfs with weak fields. We found one possible candidate (WD 0310−688) that may have a weak magnetic field of −6.1±2.2 kG. Next, we determine the fraction and distribution of magnetic white dwarfs in the Solar neighborhood, and investigate the probability of finding more of these objects based on the current incidence of magnetism in white dwarfs within 20 pc of the Sun. We have also analyzed the spectra of the white dwarfs to obtain effective temperatures and surface gravities. Subject headings: white dwarfs — magnetic fields

On the Dissociation Equilibrium of H2 in Very Cool, Helium-Rich White Dwarf Atmospheres

We investigate the dissociation equilibrium of H2 in very cool, helium-rich white dwarf atmospheres. We present the solution of the non-ideal chemical equilibrium for the dissociation of molecular hydrogen in a medium of dense helium. We find that at the photosphere of cool white dwarfs of Teff = 4000K, the non-ideality results in an increase of the mole fraction of molecular hydrogen by up to ...

The Halo White Dwarf WD 0346+246 Revisited

The extreme helium-rich atmospheric composition determined for the halo white dwarf WD 0346+246 is reexamined. This solution is shown to be improbable from an astrophysical point of view when accretion of hydrogen and metals from the interstellar medium is taken into account. An alternate solution is proposed where hydrogen and helium are present in the atmospheric regions in equal amounts. The...

D ec 1 99 5 The White Dwarf Companions of 56 Persei and HR 3643

We have obtained low-dispersion IUE spectra of the stars 56 Persei (F4 V) and HR 3643 (F7 II), as part of a survey of late-type stars with a 1565 Å flux excess in the TD-1 ultraviolet sky survey. The IUE spectrum of each star reveals the presence of a hot white dwarf companion. We fit the Lyα profile and ultraviolet continuum using pure hydrogen models, but the distance of the primary star is a...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

Do weak magnetic fields prevent hydrogen from accreting onto metal - line white dwarf stars ? ⋆

The widely accepted assumption is that metals detected in the spectra of a few cool helium-rich white dwarfs cannot be of primordial origin and therefore must be accreted from the interstellar medium. However, the observed abundances of hydrogen are much too low to be compatible with the high accretion rates inferred from metal accretion. Hydrogen accretion is therefore suppressed compared to m...
